Dr. Zolani Buba

Dr. Zolani Buba is a seasoned attorney specialising in tax law, business rescue, commercial advisory and mergers and acquisitions. As Director of BZ Attorneys Incorporated, he provides strategic leadership of the firm's litigation and advisory practice, guiding attorneys and candidate attorneys in complex mandates spanning tax disputes, business rescue proceedings, corporate restructuring and commercial litigation.
He has held senior roles, including serving as National Specialist at the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and contributing to the Davis Tax Committee, where he advanced reforms addressing Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS). Dr Buba currently holds appointment as a Chairperson of the SARS Tax Board. His expertise further encompasses governance, regulatory compliance, fiscal accountability and institutional contracting, enabling clients to meet statutory obligations while sustaining commercial growth.
On the continental stage, Dr. Buba has served as a technical expert for the Africa Tax Administration Forum and as advisor to the African Union Commission, shaping tax policy, addressing illicit financial flows and contributing to resolutions adopted by African Ministers of Finance. He has been involved in the review and revision of the SADC Development Finance Institutions Network and the Development Finance Resource Centre (DFRC) Charter and has further supported major institutional transactions, including an acquisition transaction for the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) in excess of a R 1 billion in valuation.
An accomplished author, Dr. Buba has published in leading journals such as De Rebus, Without Prejudice, and Business Tax & Company Law Quarterly. He has contributed to the Companies and Other Business Structures in South Africa (Oxford University Press) and has co-authored the book Tax: A Transaction Based Approach (Oxford University Press), positioning him as a thought leader in the intersection of tax and corporate law. His career reflects a blend of academic excellence, practical experience and strategic insight; establishing him as a trusted advisor to corporates, municipalities and continental institutions.
